Today (April 24th) is World Meningitis Day. Meningitis, which affects more than 2.8 million people worldwide each year, is an inflammation of the membranes around the spinal cord and brain. It can affect anyone of any age but is most likely to appear in infants, teenagers, and older adults. It is a serious illness and can be deadly. Of those affected by bacterial meningitis, 20% will die and 1 in 5 survivors will have long term effects. If you suspect you have meningitis, get medical attention urgently.
