Time's Up, Trans Fats!

In the category of good news this week, on June 18, 2018, the U.S. ban on trans fats went into effect.   The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended that they are banned worldwide by 2023.  While some trans fats occur naturally in some animals, such as cows, partially hydrogenated oils (PHO) are the main (and unhealthiest) source of trans fats in our diets. 


While they may have helped make our pastries flaky, they also raised our bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and lowered the good (HDL).  From, enjoy this infographic detailing the history, health effects, labeling, and eventual ban on these dietary demons.
