Website Wednesday!

April 12, 2017

Today’s Website Wednesday is Sleep Education.  From the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Sleep Education provides easy to read information about common sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, restless legs, bruxism (grinding your teeth), and jet lag.  It also features less common sleep issues, including narcolepsy.

The CDC estimates that 35% of Americans fail to get the recommended amount of sleep needed per night, seven hours or up.  Getting less sleep than you need increases your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and weight gain. Also, those who are chronically tired are more likely to cause traffic accidents.

The website also provides tips for healthy sleep, also known as “sleep hygiene.”  These tips include getting to bed at a consistent time (even on the weekends), planning bedtime early enough to assure yourself at least seven hours of sleep, establishing a wind down routine, removing electronic devices from the bedroom, and reducing caffeine and alcohol intake.

It also features a search engine to find a AASM accredited sleep center, like our own at Mary Rutan Hospital.

Having trouble getting the kids to sleep at night?  The AASM provides bedtime story books that can be purchased on Amazon or at your favorite bookseller, or on your Ipad or Kindle.  These books can help with bedtime imagery that can help settle little ones into a restful slumber.
